Oral Surgeons: Experts in Anesthesia and Patient Safety

Choosing sedation means trusting your care team to keep you safe—and our oral surgeons are uniquely qualified to do just that. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive years of advanced training in anesthesia that goes far beyond what’s required in general dentistry.

In fact, oral surgeons are the only dental specialists with hospital-based anesthesia training as part of their residency. This includes hundreds of cases involving general anesthesia, deep sedation, and emergency airway management. They’re trained not just to administer anesthesia, but to monitor vital signs, recognize complications early, and respond with life-saving expertise if needed.

At Precision Oral Surgery, our surgeons use this high level of training to ensure your sedation experience is as safe as it is comfortable.

Why Sedation Might Be Recommended

We recommend sedation for all kinds of reasons. It’s not just for people with dental anxiety. Sedation may be helpful if:

Our job is to create a peaceful and safe environment where you can feel at ease. Sedation helps to do that—with options tailored just for you.

Your Sedation Options

Every patient is different, and so is every treatment plan. During your consultation, we’ll help you decide which level of sedation best fits your needs and comfort level.

Local Anesthesia

Used in nearly every procedure, local anesthesia numbs the treatment area, so you won’t feel pain. You’ll be awake and aware, but comfortable.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

This is a gentle option for patients with mild dental anxiety. You breathe it through a small mask, and it helps you feel calm without putting you to sleep. It wears off quickly and doesn’t require a long recovery.

Oral Sedation

Taken in pill form before your procedure, oral sedation helps you feel sleepy and relaxed. You’ll stay awake but may not remember much of the experience. You’ll need someone to drive you home afterward.

IV Sedation

This option is ideal for patients with moderate to severe anxiety or for more complex procedures. Medication is delivered directly into the bloodstream, creating a deep state of relaxation. Most people don’t remember the procedure at all, which is a relief.

General Anesthesia

Used for unique cases, general anesthesia places you in a fully unconscious state. This is often reserved for very complex surgeries or for patients with specific medical needs. You’ll be closely monitored by experts that will keep you safe and comfortable.

The Preferred Option: IV Sedation

IV sedation is one of the most requested options in our practice—and for good reason. It allows you to enter a twilight state where you feel deeply relaxed but still breathe on your own. You likely won’t remember anything about the procedure, and you won’t feel discomfort.

We recommend IV sedation for many types of oral surgery, especially if you:

While you’re sedated, we carefully monitor your breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate using hospital-grade equipment. Our surgeons are highly trained in administering IV sedation safely, and your well-being is our number one priority.

Safety and Preparation for Sedation

Before your procedure, we’ll review your full medical history and go over any medications you take. Some patients may need to fast or adjust certain medications the day before.

After IV or oral sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours. It’s best to rest and take it easy while the effects wear off.

During your procedure, we use real-time monitoring to track your vital signs and ensure your safety. Our team is fully trained to respond to any needs that come up. You’ll be in good hands the entire time.

How to Choose the Right Sedation Option

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. We’ll help you consider a few key factors, like:

We’ll guide you with honesty and care, so you can feel confident about your choice—and your procedure.
