When you’re preparing for oral surgery, it helps to know what to expect. Following a few simple steps before your procedure can make your recovery smoother and more comfortable.
At Precision Oral Surgery, we want you to feel confident walking into your appointment. These pre-op instructions are here to guide you through each step. If you’re ever unsure about something, just give us a call.
Once your procedure is scheduled, we’ll confirm the date, time, and location with you. Please plan to arrive about 20 to 30 minutes early. This gives us time to check you in and answer any last-minute questions.
If anything changes—or if you’re feeling sick before your surgery—please give us a call right away so we can help you adjust your appointment as needed.
We’ll review your full medical history before surgery. Be sure to let us know about:
Some medications, like aspirin or blood thinners, may need to be paused while you prepare for treatment day. Others, like blood pressure medicine, should still be taken with just a small sip of water. We’ll guide you based on your specific needs.
If you’re scheduled to receive sedation or general anesthesia, you’ll need to stop eating and drinking at least 6 to 8 hours before your procedure. This includes coffee, gum, and mints.
It’s possible you may be allowed to drink clear liquids (like water or apple juice) up to 2 hours before your appointment, but only if we’ve told you that it’s okay. Diabetic patients will get special instructions to help keep blood sugar stable.
Please avoid alcohol and tobacco for at least 24 hours before surgery. These can affect how your body responds to sedation and healing.
We recommend brushing your teeth before your appointment, but skip the mouthwash unless we’ve given you one to use. Avoid wearing makeup, lotion, heavy perfume, nail polish, or jewelry. These can get in the way of monitoring equipment.
It’s also best to wear loose, comfortable clothing—something with short sleeves is ideal. And if you wear contacts, leave them out and bring your glasses instead.
You’ll need someone you trust to drive you back home after surgery. Sedation affects your reflexes, so it’s not safe to drive yourself.
It’s also important to have a responsible adult stay with you for at least 24 hours after surgery. They can help you settle in, manage medications, and keep an eye on your recovery.
Depending on your procedure, we may ask you to use a prescription rinse or antibiotic the day before surgery. If you’ve been given any special instructions, be sure to follow them closely. These small steps can go a long way in preventing infection and helping your body heal properly.
Please complete any consent forms or pre-op paperwork before your appointment. Bring your ID and insurance information with you.
If you’re feeling unwell before surgery—fever, congestion, cough—call us right away. It’s better to check in early so we can reschedule if needed.
